Ensuring Access, Dignity, and Learning: The Nourish NYC Initiative

Food insecurity is characterized by limited or uncertain access to adequate food due to limited economic resources. A significant percentage of students at CUNY schools live in poverty, including many who are the first generation in their family to attend college. Over 40% of CUNY students are among the first generation in their family to attend college and 60% report an annual household income of less than $30,000. With this statistics affecting CUNY students. BELL Organization launched its new initiative titled Nourish NYC where we were able to create a partnership between Queens College’s Knights Pantry and RAP4BRONX to ensure students on the campus of Queens College are able to have access to fresh produce. In addition to assisting students at Queens College we were able to provide meals and menstrual hygiene products to the students at Bronx Community College and snacks to the children’s daycare located on the campus which provides assistance to single mothers attempting to gain an education while going to college.
